Female Driver Insurance – Not Sexist, Really!
Many people may think that specialising in car insurance specifically for women is sexist – either it caters to unfairly to women only, or women are no different to men and therefore deserve the same kind of insurance policies. But think about it for a minute, and it might just make sense.
Female driver insurance is actually better for women, because (as you may or may not know), women are better drivers (and this is not sexist, but a fact). Over 90% of offences on the road that result in a conviction are for males. That means less than 10% of recorded convictions belong to women. Coupled with the fact that women own only 2% of the recorded convictions for dangerous driving (working backwards, men are responsible for 98% of dangerous driving convictions) and you end up at the inevitable conclusion that women are indeed better drivers.
The figures show that it’s not simply a case that they just don’t get caught as often; 90% is not a slight skew, it’s a landslide. The obvious conclusion is that women must be better drivers; they have the approximately the same amount of accidents but usually don’t drive the long distances that men do – how many female truck drivers are there compared to males? Taxi drivers? Couriers? Women take the kids to and from school, go shopping and visit people.
The women that do have accidents mostly find that their crashes are less severe, with less damage and less serious injuries. The repairs needed for their cars are not as great and their injuries don’t require as much rehabilitation. Women generally don’t tend to drive at the speeds that males do; they are more cautious, and combined this means that they are less of a risk to an insurance company when it comes to insurance. And one further noticeable difference between female and male drivers: females usually don’t tend to ‘hot up’ their cars. They don’t add extras to make the car look or run better, such as alloy wheels, spoilers, fat exhaust pipes and turbo engines. They don’t care too much for loud speaker systems (although some do) and racing pedals don’t take their fancy. Their cars are usually small, with a small engine and no ‘look-at-me’ add-ons.
So why should women pay the same amount in premiums as a male? If they are better drivers all round, and their claims are likely to be much less, it makes sense that their insurance payments are less, too. Female driver insurance premiums are therefore smaller, but there are ways that a woman can further decrease her payments. Sticking with the smaller cars and smaller engines is one good way, and another is making sure you have all the security features such as special locks and alarms. There’s no reason to be paying the same as a male!

Oh come on now. 90% of violent criminals are probably men too. That doesn’t mean all men should be treated like a violent criminal (ALL pay the higher premium in car insurance)! And no women (ALL pay the lower premium)!
So why should I pay more on price based on a gross sexist generalisation? I.e. Women are better drivers all round. How is this comment NOT sexist? Is it ok to be sexist if you have some data to support your sexism?
I can guarantee you that I am a 100% better driver than the 10% of convicted female drivers.
Can you explain how the behaviour of others predetermines my behaviour?
Find a more appropriate measure I say. Based on driving record? Or higher excesses for those at fault. Insurance companies pay big dollars for risk assessors. Surely they can do better than this playground factor assessment. And you could provide better journalism by challenging what insurance companies spew forth. It might be the way they operate but that doesn’t make it correct. Neither does age discrimination.
Maybe the real reason is a lot of men are less price sensitive when it comes to their vehicles. And women reluctant to drive if costs are too high? The market determines the success of a product, not the company. At least consider and present some further insights and answers of your own.
