You can’t deny that the recession has affected the life of Americans. With more and more Americans feeling an economic crunch, more and more people are pulling in their metaphorical belts another notch.

Nowhere are the effects of a recession seen more strongly than in the luxury market. When people are looking for expenses that they can cut, of course it is the non-crucial things that go first.

One place that the recession has definitely affected is the cosmetic surgery industry. Cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction (which is also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) have taken a hit due to the increased financial stresses of the recession. Because cosmetic surgeries are not strictly necessary and only serve to improve one’s appearance, the amount of demand that exists for them can vary greatly depending on the state of the economy.

From 2007 to 2008, liposuction fell in popularity by roughly 25%. Granted, the over 341,000 lipectomies performed in 2008 is still a large number. However, a clear connection between the country’s financial state and the popularity of lipoplasty can be seen.

Alan Gold, the president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery suggests that people are afraid to get cosmetic surgeries for a number of reasons. He suggests that they are concerned about whether or not their finances can cover the cost of cosmetic surgery and that they’re concerned about the nature of their future income.

According to Mr. Gold, people are also concerned aboutthe amount of time they’ll need to have off from work in order to recover from their surgeries.

Mr. Gold is convinced that the downturn in cosmetic surgery popularity is merely temporary. As soon as the economy recovers, he suggests that things will equal out again. In fact, President Gold believes that there will actually be a substantial upsurge in the popularity of liposuction and other cosmetic procedures once all of the country’s economic wrinkles are ironed out.

Once the recesssion is over, Gold believes that people will begin to get the procedures that they have put off during the hard times, which will drive the popularity of cosmetic surgery up even above typical levels.

One of the positive effects of the recession on potential patients is that lipoplasty may actually be cheaper. With fewer patients and less demand, many surgeons are putting down their prices and offering specials in order to try to get new customers. The potential patients who can afford cosmetic surgery may be able to get their liposuctions performed more cheaply and easily than during the times when cosmetic surgery is booming.
