You can donate a used car to charity – truck or other vehicle and get a good tax deduction or tax write-off. Most charities will want used cars to truck that are drivable, however there are a few that will accept used cars with minor repairs or cars that won’t entail a lot of work to get them running again.

Deciding on the charity will be the next decision to make. There are hundreds of charities looking for car donations – cars, trucks, RV’s, Vans, motorcycles and just about any vehicle that you can imagine, even airplanes.

They may have used car lots that they sell the cars or other vehicles on or they may broker them out to a middleman who specializes in selling these cars and share some of the profit with the charity. However the charity only gets a small percentage of the profits. Charities do this because they’re not set up to re-sell the cars. They don’t have the storage space and can’t afford to run charity auctions, which can be very expensive. Car donation charity auctioneers charge huge fees.

You can start by contacting your local charities and see what their criteria are and if they actively sell or use the vehicle or broker it out and whether the car must be in running condition or not. Also find out if towing is required, who pays for it. Some charities keep the vehicle for their own use or donate it to a worthy person in need of a car to get to a job, school, etc.

Many charities are not legally set up to accept car donations. You want to make sure to check whether they are or not. You can check with the IRS to see if they’re a non-profit organization listed under paragraph 501 ( C ) ( 3 ) .
The amount of your tax deduction is going to depend on the value of the car or other vehicle. You may have to use an auto guide like Kelley Blue Book or NADA’s guide to establish a value for the vehicle. In some instances you may need to get an outside appraisal, especially if you think the car has considerable value, to get the best tax deduction.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to donate a used car to charity and the resulting tax deduction makes it well worth it. Do the initial homework and legwork and the rest will be done by the charitable organization. They will help you make the car donation process easy.
