Choosing the right type of insurance plan in the state of Illinois can be one of the most important decisions that an individual, family, or employer can make for their employees. Many times this is a decision that cannot easily be switched except at certain times of enrollment throughout the year. This is what makes purchasing Illinois health insurance a task that requires a fair bit of time and effort, in order to find the right plan that everyone can be happy with, giving the policy holder a feeling of security and allowing them to go to the doctors of their choice.

There are different restrictions on how much freedom the policy holder may have. Some Illinois health insurance plans will be health management organizations, or HMO’s. These are in fact the most popular plans, and usually the most cost-effective. With this type of plan, there is a network of physicians of all different types. As long as you visit a physician within this network, the out of pocket costs will be generally very low, perhaps 10 dollars per visit. However, if you wish to visit a specialist outside of this designated network, then the costs will need to be paid entirely out of your pocket, making that a costly option.

Another type of Illinois health insurance plan is to use a preferred provider organization, or PPO, which gives you a bit more freedom when it comes to choosing which physicians in Illinois you would prefer to see. While there is still a network that incurs the lowest costs, you have the option of visiting a medical specialist outside of the network. However, under most circumstances you will need to pay these costs up front out of your pocket, and then fill out paperwork to get reimbursed by the insurance company.

These are the two main types of Illinois health insurance plans that a person will run into in their search for the right provider. Both have their own pros and cons, depending on what a person’s health care needs may be. Some will wish for more freedom, perhaps at a higher out of pocket copayment cost. Others would much rather have a lower price that they pay for each visit, at the expense of maybe not having a complete say in which doctors they are allowed to see. Needs will depend on the individual’s circumstances, including their budget, current state of health, and whether or not they have a family.
