Say No To Impulse Buying

Have you ever been out and about and seen something that really appealed to your senses? Was it something that you thought you absolutely had to have at that moment? Maybe you had never thought of what it was that was captivating you at that moment. If you gave in and purchased that item, then you are guilty of impulse buying.

Impulse buying occurs when you purchase an item, often expensive, without any planning. You see it. You want it. You buy it. There’s no thought process involved. Sometimes the purchase is completely irrational because, perhaps, you could not afford it. Impulse buying can be dangerous because it can often put a strain on others who are affected by the purchase and may also hurt your finances.

One way to curb impulsive spending is to always make a list before you go shopping. Decide what it is that you need and stick to your list. Often we buy items we don’t need because it makes us feel better. Even small purchases made on impulse can add up quickly. When you are grocery shopping, for instance, avoid browsing the aisles that do not contain items on your list. If you walk down an aisle, you will more than likely end up buying something from that aisle that wasn’t on your list.

Next, you should track where your money is going. Know exactly what you are paying for. This means you will have to keep receipts and record your purchases. If you track your purchases, you will be able to save money and plan for future purchases. To help you stay in control of your money, you should keep enough cash on hand to buy the necessities. Put the remaining cash in the bank. This will prevent you from overspending. Once you run out of cash, you will know that is all you have until the next payday. You will be less tempted to make an impulsive purchases if you don’t have cash in hand.

Set goals for your financial future. Keep in mind that if you continue to make impulsive purchases, it will be difficult to reach your financial goals. So, having some goals in mind will keep you motivated to curb the spending.

Remember that it is okay to reward yourself from time to time. Don’t go overboard. But, a little treat for keeping your finances on track will refresh and motivate you to stay the course.
