Why a Medical Doctor Needs Professional Indemnity Insurance

A doctor has the responsibility to treat or cure an illness. There are many different kinds of doctors. There are family doctors, which are otherwise referred to as primary care doctors. They have the capability to treat every member of the family, although most commonly for non-life threatening illnesses only.

There are also those with specialisations such as a paediatrician, one that takes care of babies and little kids; an obstetrician, one that takes care of pregnant women; a surgeon, one that performs a surgical operation; and an anaesthesiologist, one that delivers anaesthesia to a person who needs to undergo an operation. These are just a few of the many kinds of doctors doing medical practice today.

The work of a doctor is very important; without them, there would be no cure for our sickness, no medical help for any health problems we may have. Indeed, we simply cannot imagine a world without these miracle workers, so to speak. However, just as the job of a doctor is considered highly valuable, it can also be dangerous. The smallest of mistakes could endanger a person’s life, and if you are not careful, you could be subject to criticism, complaints, and even a lawsuit.

Although patients can never really say that any mistake made by their doctor is intentional, nevertheless, they will still be held liable. As such, there will always be that risk of having to face claims and lawsuits made by patients or their family members on their behalf. This is the reality and it is something that every medical practitioner should be ready for.

One of the things that you, as a doctor, should always have is professional indemnity insurance. This gives you financial protection in the event that one of your patients should file a lawsuit against you because of what happened to them while they were under your care.

Such cover includes legal fees and payout costs, should the result of the lawsuit be in favour of the claimant. Think about it. How much would it cost you to face a lawsuit? This depends on the severity of the case, which could range from thousands of Euros for mild cases, to millions for life-threatening outcomes, permanent disability, or death. Readying yourself for such situations does not mean you admit your mistake because most often than not, it is not intentional. Sometimes, a doctor does not even have anything to do with what happened to their patient and it is just unfortunate that something terrible happened while they were under your care. This in itself holds you responsible. It is not about admitting guilt, but it is about giving yourself protection when these things happen.

Professional indemnity insurance will help you go through with claims and lawsuits. Without their protection, you could end up with huge financial woes, and certainly, you do not want this to happen. It is therefore necessary that you get covered and if you have not done so yet, it is about time that you do. Find a reliable insurance company and get insured before it is too late.
